Bahrain Mirror: The family of detainee Khalil Al-Halwachi filed a complaint to the Bahrain Ombudsman Office regarding the infestation of insects, especially cockroaches in the pre-trial detention center at Dry Dock Prison.

"On Thursday (January 14 , 2016) we filed a complaint to Ombudsman, after the detainee has complained more than once about the spread of insects since his detention in 2014", the family said.

"Khalil confirmed that the administration of Dry Dock Prison called the Ministry of Health which made several visits and brought exterminators to spray the place, yet the problem still persists. The detainees sleep with insects especially cockroaches. Even during mealtime, they are often surprised of the presence of many of insects", the family added according to the local Al-Wasat newspaper.

"The detainees clean the place daily, in order to avoid insects, but insects come back again even if pesticides were sprayed and the place was clean", the family stressed. They appealed to the concerned parties to take the complaint into consideration because of the large number of recent complaints about insect infestation, especially cockroaches. The family also pointed out that the pretrial detention center should be clean and free of insects, since the detainees spend a long period of time there and their health might be affected, especially that insects are even found in their sleeping beds.
