Authorities Bring Charge of Assembly against HR Activist Al-Ekri and Journalist Hayyat

2017-09-11 - 6:47 p

Bahrain Mirror: The Public Prosecution charged the prominent human rights activist Abdulnabi Al-Ekri and journalist Faisal Hayyat with "assembly" and taking part in an unlicensed protest.

The prosecution interrogated Al-Ekri yesterday and charged him with taking part in an unlicensed protest in Al-Shakoura on June 23. However, he denied the charge.

The prosecution also interrogated journalist and previous detainee Faisal Hayyat and accused him of participating in an unlicensed protest in Al-Ma'ameer. Hayyat said that he denied the charge.

The authorities resorted to fabricate charges against activists and human rights defenders to justify the travel bans issued against them. Bahrain has adopted this measure a year and a half ago to prevent activists and human rights defenders from participating in the UNHRC session in Geneva.

Travel ban against activists prompted criticism of UN and US, Bahrain's key ally.
