Qatari Court Issues Life Term Sentences against Poet Ibn Al-Dheeb, 3 Others who Rejected Elections Law

Bahrain Mirror: A Qatari court closed on Tuesday (May 10, 2022) the case of known poet Mohammed Rashid Hassan Nasser Al-Ajami (Poet Ibn Al-Dheeb), Hamad Bin Fetais Al-Marri, Dr. Haza'a Ali Haza'a Salem Abu Sharida and Dr. Rashid Ali Haza'a Salem Abu Sharida, who were on trial over protesting against the elections law, social media activists reported.

The Criminal Court issued its decision and was held under the presidency of Judge Mohammed bin Ghanem Bou Sabar Al-Kabisi, and the membership of judges Khay Mohammed Ajyad, Mohammed Ghanem Al-Kuwari, and in the presence of prosecutor Ahmed Al-Sulaiti, as well as the secretary of the hearing Ahmed Mohammed Fawzi.

The court issued its ruling against the first and second defendants in person and sentenced the rest in absentia.

First: It acquitted all defendants of charges of attempted act that prejudiced the independence of the State and the charge of participating in the criminal agreement in article 128 of the Penal Code.

Second: It acquitted Mohammed Rashid Hassan Nasser Al-Ajami (Mohammed Ibn Al-Dheeb) and Mohammed Hamad Bin Fetais Al-Marri of charge of communicating with a foreign country.

Third: It acquitted Mohammed Hamad Bin Fetais Al-Marri of the criminal agreement charge documented in article 46 of the Penal Code.

Fourth: It sentenced Haza'a Ali Haza'a Salem Abu Sharida, Rashid Ali Haza'a Salem Abu Sharida and Mohammed Rashid Hassan Nasser Al-Ajami (Mohammed Ibn Al-Dheeb) to life imprisonment over the charges brought against them.

Fifth: It sentenced Mohammed Hamad Bin Fetais Al-Marri to 15 years in jail over the charges brought against him.

Sixth:Confiscation of seized phones and deleting the electronic accounts used in committing the crimes brought against the accused.

A large number of the Al-Murrah tribe members in Qatar staged unprecedented protests last August against the new election law that prevented them from running for parliamentary elections for the first time.

Poet Ibn Al-Dheeb has been living outside Qatar since last year, and has appeared in several videos posted in his account criticizing the continued arrest of other citizens who protested against the election law.
